Please do not wish me a Happy Women's Day
What really is so special about today?
I got up, had my cup of tea while being entertained by my 3 year old, made breakfast, ate and fed breakfast to said 3 year old, cursed the flu slowing down me, cleaned up a little bit around the house.
Read a few messages telling me i am a strong woman and i should be celebrating that today. Ok!
My cook came in the morning. What had her day been like till 11 am? She got up, washed up, cooked breakfast for her entire family, went to another house to cook their meal, came to my house to cook my meals. Her plan is to go to the local grocer as she does every Sunday and then go home.
My housekeeper came in the morning. She had taken care of her kid's breakfast, dressed them up, sent them off to play, she will finish her work at my house and go back to hers to finish cleaning up and cooking at her house.
My neighbor got up today, fetched the paper for her father in law. She and her mother - in- law made breakfast for their family, she straightened up her house, fed and bathed her kids and now is busy preparing meals for her family.
She looked over in the midst of all her chores and wished me a "happy women's day" and i extended the same wish to her as i went about my chores.
Meanwhile, i still have got my whats app full with people wishing me a happy women's day and telling me how strong they think i am. And as i look around me and all the women surrounding me, i wish people would stop wishing us. Just let us be and let us carry on with our routine and unless you have planned anything exceptional ( read permanent) for us, i suggest you leave us alone to carry on with our lives as they are.
We are not strong TODAY, we are not exceptional TODAY, we are not great TODAY. We are what we are every single day. You want to wish us, help us with the chores, share the household burdens with us, help us raise the kids, learn to cook and clean, give us a cup of tea when we come back from work, don's harass and stare at us in public spaces, don't judge us by our looks alone, don't tell us what to wear, how to wear. Break the stereotypes surrounding us.
Or just let us be, but please, oh please, do not send us a "happy women's day" message.
